However, a stunning turnaround which saw Ilkay Gundogan score twice either side of a Rodri equaliser meant the Blues secured the three points they needed to pip Liverpool to the title.
Despite suffering disappointment in the Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup, Pep Guardiola's side were able to celebrate their domestic triumph through the streets of Manchester on Monday. With the Blues falling to just three defeats in the league, there was no shortage of contenders to choose from for Player of the Year.
