Man City confirm second summer signing with Kalvin Phillips set to make it three

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Stefan Ortega as back-up to Ederson.

The 29-year-old, who joined from German side Arminia Bielefeld, has signed a three-year deal and will replace Zack Steffen, who is set to join Middlesbrough on loan.

Ortega, who joined City as a free agent, said: “This is a fantastic move for me. Manchester City are an amazing team – a squad with world-class quality in every area.

“To be given the chance to join this group of players and help continue the club’s success is a dream for me. “I have enjoyed my time in Germany and I want to thank the Arminia Bielefeld fans for their support.

“But this new challenge of coming to City and playing in the Premier League is too good for me to ignore. “I can’t wait to get started, meet my team-mates and begin working with Pep and his backroom staff.”

City Director of Football Txiki Begiristain said: “This is a very good deal for City. “Stefan has an excellent pedigree – his career speaks for itself. We're signing a goalkeeper who has vast experience and he will help us in our quest for more trophies.

“He has joined to compete with the other goalkeepers and help our youngsters, so it’s a transfer we are really pleased to have secured.”

His arrival comes just two weeks after Gavin Bazunu completed a £12m move to Premier League rivals Southampton, while American Steffen is poised to join Middlesbrough on loan for the upcoming season.

Ortega becomes City's second signing of the summer following the £51m arrival of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund. The Norwegian striker will also be joined by Julian Alvarez in Pep Guardiola's squad, having signed in January and spending the remaining portion of the season back on loan with River Plate.

And two could very quickly become three with Kalvin Phillips closing in on his move to the champions. Leeds United have accepted a £45m bid for the England international and he is now expected to complete a medical on Friday (July 1) before his move is officially confirmed.
