But two last gasp goals from Rodrygo brought the game to extra time before a Karim Benzema penalty saw Manchester City crashing out.
The loss adds to a long list of recent Champions League exits for Man City and many quipped that they are similar to Mayo in the All-Ireland Championship.
Mayo have lost back to back All-Ireland finals and six finals since 2012 and a number of people compared City's most recent loss to Mayo's quest for the All-Ireland title.
One person said: "Man City really are the Mayo of football"
While another added: "Man City the Soccer equivalent of Mayo"
And another added: "Man City are the Mayo of European football."
