Man City and Man United join race to sign £71m Chelsea star as Liverpool prepare rival transfer

Chelsea could have a bidding war on their hands soon as Mason Mount begins to attract interest. The 24-year-old faces an increasingly uncertain future at Stamford Bridge after entering the final 18 months of his deal.

He is yet to pen an extension with the Blues and negotiations are proving to be difficult. Chelsea higher-ups have been working hard to extend Mount's future since November, according to The Telegraph.

However, the report states that there has been 'no breakthrough' and some officials at the club are 'resigned' to the midfielder not wanting to commit his future in west London. If the two parties can not reach an agreement over a new contract then Cobham graduate will leave for free in the June 2024.

In the meantime, Mount would be available for a cut-price fee at the end of the season and then again in January to Premier League clubs. With the England international yet to show any sign of putting pen to paper at Chelsea, a host of top European clubs have begun to circle his situation.

According to ESPN, Manchester City and Manchester United have joined Liverpool in monitoring Mount's contract saga. The report states that the Englishman is reluctant to commit to a long-term deal - the type which has become a controversial subject in recent weeks after Enzo Fernandez penned a deal which keeps him at the club until 2031.

ESPN also state that Mount is looking for a 'significant increase on his existing wage, which is said to be around £80,000-per-week. The £71.2million-rated midfielder has struggled for form recently, with on-loan star Joao Felix keeping him out of the starting-lineup.

Mount's performances haven't helped his case amid contract talks. And, while he'll be eager to transform his fortunes and prove himself worthy, Glenn Hoddle has urged Graham Potter to keep him out of the side amid concerns that he's burned out.

"I'm not surprised. In the length of time I have been in football, I have been waiting for that to happen," the former Chelsea boss said. "He’s a very, very good young player and he has looked sharp for many years.

"I am thinking he needs a rest at some stage. He was playing England games, Southgate trusted him and played him a lot.

"He needed a rest. All of these players have played a lot, but particularly him. If you look from his days, even at Derby, Frank played him all the time, he was always in the team. Tuchel was the same. He’s had a hell of a lot of football."
