Man charged with causing explosion to Sidcup ULEZ camera

Vigilantes repeatedly targeted the cameras after the Ulez area was expanded last year - (PA Archive)

A man has been charged with causing an explosion after a newly-installed ULEZ camera was blown up.

Kevin Rees, 62, is accused of putting nearby people and property in damage with the attack on the camera in Willersley Avenue, Sidcup, on December 6 last year.

He also faces three charges of possessing stun guns, and is due to appear at Westminster magistrates court on Monday.

The Metropolitan Police said Rees, of Harcourt Avenue, Sidcup, has been charged with an alleged offence under the Explosive Substances Act 1883.

“We know that this incident caused much concern locally at the time”, said Detective Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry, who leads local policing in the Bexley area.

“Local officers have continued to support the investigation team as they have diligently gone about gathering evidence in this case, working closely with the CPS, which has led to these charges being brought.

“The criminal justice process must now run its course and I would therefore ask people not to speculate further as we await the conclusion of this case at court.”

Police were called out to reports of an explosion at around 6.45pm on December 6, with officers from the Counter Terrorism Command called in to assist.

Rees is due to appear in court in a court hearing set aside for dealing with allegations involving terrorism.

Police also said that a second man, Stephen Richard Harwood-Stamper, 62, of Church Road, Broadbridge Heath, Horsham, West Sussex, has also been charged with criminal damage to the same ULEZ camera.

That alleged incident happened earlier the same day, and is unconnected to the explosion, police said.

Harwood-Stamper is due to appear at Bromley magistrates court on November 27.
