Gatwick Airport railway station was cordoned off after reports of a man carrying firearms on board a train on Friday.

The railway service was stopped after the alarm was raised following reports from eyewitnesses that a man on board the train from Brighton was carrying a firearm.

The station was descended upon by emergency services, including British Transport Police and Sussex Police officers.

Passengers using Gatwick Express, Great Western Railway, Southern and Thameslink services were warned to expect delays due to "an incident in the Gatwick Airport area" by National Rail.

In a post to social media, London Gatwick Airport said: “Due to an ongoing incident, train services are currently not stopping at Gatwick Airport. Passengers should check services before travelling and leave more time to complete their journey.”

The man was discovered carrying two imitation firearms and arrested by police.

A British Transport Police spokesperson told Metro: “We received a report at 12.45pm on 20 February of a man on board a train from Brighton with a firearm.

“Sussex Police officers met the train at Gatwick Airport and arrested a man in possession of two imitation firearms.

“BTP officers are investigating.”

The train station was evacuated, but airport services are believed to have been unaffected.

Gatwick Airport train station has since reopened, but there may still be some delays as services readjust.
