KOLKATA: A 32-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by three men who dumped his body near a local canal before fleeing the spot.
The incident was reported from the Canal East Road in Narkeldanga on Thursday morning.
The accused, Dipak Roy, a resident of Beliaghata Railway Quarters, and Vijay Lal and Meherilal Chowdhury, both residents of Beliaghata Road, were arrested. The three alleged that the victim, Sk Shamim alias Nata, a local ragpicker, had stolen a wallet and a mobile. They reportedly called up the victim’s mother, Meena Sk, asked for the “stolen” objects and threatened her with dire consequences. She went looking for her son and found him lying on the road. He was taken to NRS Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
“The victim had multiple injuries on his back. The post-mortem report revealed that his death was homicidal in nature. Cops from the Narkeldanga police station have started an unnatural death case,” said Priyabrata Roy, DC (ESD).
“We checked the call and traced it to Ray, whom we rounded up from the crossing of APC Road and Raja Raj Narayan Street. He was carrying the mobile, from where the call was made to the victim’s mother. After that, we nabbed the two others,” said an officer.
The accused, who are either employed at the depot or at a restaurant in the area, told cops they had asked the victim to meet them near the canal. Once the victim went there, the accused asked him to return the stolen items. This led to an argument, and then, they assaulted the victim, killing him on the spot, said police sources.
