Man arrested in relation to murder of Kerry farmer Michael Gaine

The 56-year-old sheep farmer with land near Kenmare in Co Kerry was reported missing more than two months ago (Garda/PA) -

A man has been arrested for questioning in relation to the investigation into the murder of Kerry sheep farmer Michael Gaine.

Mr Gaine, 56, was last seen alive on the morning of March 20 last year when he bought phone credit in a shop in Kenmare, near where he has farmland.

His family reported him missing the next day, after they said he went to check on his farm animals but never returned home.

A month later, Mr Gaine’s wife Janice and sister Noreen O’Regan issued an appeal for information after the missing person probe was upgraded to a homicide investigation.

After weeks of extensive searching involving Irish soldiers, the Coast Guard, the Garda water unit and road checkpoints, Mr Gaine’s partial remains were found at his farm on May 16.

A man aged in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of Mr Gaine’s murder on May 18, and was held for questioning for a day before being released without charge.

On Tuesday, gardai said they had arrested a man aged in his 50s in connection with the investigation into Mr Gaine’s disappearance and death.

He was detained for questioning at a Garda station in Kerry under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

The investigation is being led by the Kerry Division of the Serious Crime Unit and is supported by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

An Garda Siochana said it continues to liaise with and support the family of Mr Gaine through family liaison officers.
