Police have arrested a man at a sportsground car park after he allegedly sent sexual messages to someone he believed was a 14-year-old girl and arranged to meet her in person.
The 23-year-old Farrer man, who has not been named at this stage, appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday, September 5.
He did not apply for bail, and it was formally refused.
Police commenced an investigation in late August after receiving reports of a person exchanging sexual messages with the 14-year-old girl on social media.
Officers allege the man had previously supplied the girl with cash and alcohol.
Police will further allege he attended Chapman Oval on Friday night under the belief he was meeting with the 14-year-old girl.
He was arrested at the car park and charged with grooming a child, using a carriage service for child abuse material, and supplying liquor to a child in a public place.
Mobile phones seized during the arrest will undergo forensic examination to determine if further charges will be laid.
The man will return to court later this month.
