Man arrested after armed robbery involving 'large kitchen knife' in East Belfast

A man has been arrested after a report of an armed robbery involving a 'large kitchen knife' in East Belfast on Friday.

Officers responded to a call about an ongoing robbery in a retail premises in the Upper Newtownards Road area just after 9pm on July 29. A 47-year-old man remains in custody at this time.

Detective Sergeant McCartan said: “It was reported around 9.10pm that a robbery was ongoing in retail premises in the Upper Newtownards Road area. It was reported that a man entered the shop, armed with what was described as a large kitchen knife.

"He demanded cash and cigarettes from the cashiers before leaving with a quantity of both. It is believed that he fled on foot, down an alleyway, in the direction of Sandown Road. Two members of staff who were present at the time were physically uninjured but have been left shaken by this ordeal.

"The suspect was described as approximately 6’ tall, of heavy build and had his face covered. A 47-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of armed robbery. He remains in custody at this time.

"Our enquiries are ongoing and we would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything, or who may have dashcam or other video footage, to contact us on 101, quoting reference 1913 of 29/7/22."
