Man accused of lighting factory fire for insurance cash

A man has been arrested in West Pennant Hills, Sydney, over a fire in a factory in 2023 (HANDOUT/NSW POLICE)

A man has been charged with deliberately starting a fire at a factory in Sydney's southwest to make an insurance claim for financial gain.

Emergency services were called to Roberts Road in Greenacre following reports of a factory fire in the early hours of February 5, 2023.

NSW Fire and Rescue crews quickly extinguished the blaze but police established a crime scene after the incident was deemed suspicious.

Following a year-long investigation, detectives arrested a 62-year-old man at a home in West Pennant Hills, in northwest Sydney.

He was charged with damaging a property by fire or explosive.

Police allege the man deliberately lit the fire to make an insurance claim and receive financial compensation.

The man was granted strict conditional bail and is expected to appear in Burwood Local Court on April 9.
