Man, 60s, arrested after gardai seize €700k of suspected heroin in major operation

A man has been arrested after Gardaí seized €700,000 of suspected heroin following a search operation in Co Clare on Friday.

Gardai, led by the Limerick Divisional Drugs Unit and assisted by local Garda units, the Regional Dog Unit and members of the Defence Forces, conducted the searches on lands in the Ardnacrusha area.

The suspected heroin was recovered during the search, and a man in his 60s was arrested.

He is currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drugs Trafficking) Act, 1996, at Henry Street Garda station.

The man can be held for up to seven days.

The search was conducted as part of Operation Tara, an enhanced national anti-drugs strategy launched by Garda Commissioner Drew Harris on July 2, 2021.

The focus of Operation Tara is to disrupt, dismantle and prosecute drug trafficking networks, at all levels, involved in the importation, distribution, cultivation, production, local sale and supply of controlled.

A garda spokesperson said: “As part of Operation Tara, planned searches led by the Limerick Divisional Drugs Unit assisted by local Garda units, the Regional Dog Unit and members of the Defence Forces, were conducted on lands in the Ardnacrusha area.

“In the course of the searches suspected heroin with an estimated value of €700k (analysis pending) was recovered.

“A man in his 60s was arrested as part of the investigation and is currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drugs Trafficking) Act, 1996, at Henry Street Garda station.

“He can be held for up to seven days.

“The drugs will be forwarded to FSI for analysis.

“Investigations are ongoing”.
