After a string of arrests, which included four schoolchildren, police have now charged two people in connection with the assault. They are Jay Byrne, 26, of Leyland Road, Southport and a 14 year-old boy who cannot be named for legal reasons.
Both of the suspects appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court yesterday and were remanded into custody by District Judge James Hatton ahead of a further appearance before Liverpool Crown Court on August 11. The two defendants wore custody issue grey tracksuits, while 26-year-old Byrne appeared sporting mid-length blonde hair and a beard.
Five others have been bailed pending further enquiries. They include a 12-year-old girl arrested on suspicion of theft, a 15-year-old girl and two boys aged 13 and 15 arrested for assault, and a 16-year-old arrested for assisting offender. Police previously reported the girl as being 11 but has since corrected her age to 12.
