Man, 30s, arrested in relation to Cavan hit-and-run that killed Frank McNulty

Gardai have arrested a man in his 30s in relation to a fatal hit and run that occurred last month in Co Cavan.

Frank Nulty, 57, was discovered in a ditch at the side of the road by a cyclist at around 12 noon on Friday, August 19.

Emergency services attended the scene, but he was sadly pronounced dead before his body was removed to the mortuary at Cavan General Hospital.

Gardaí were treating the incident as a hit and run and at the time they said it was believed to have occurred at some point between 10:00 pm on Thursday night and 12 noon on Friday.

Following an examination of the area, it was identified that Mr. Nulty was struck by a vehicle that failed to remain at the scene. Forensic Collision Investigators completed a full technical examination of the scene and identified the vehicle they believed was involved.

Mr Nulty, who was from the Drumfomina area of New Inns, had been due to join strike action at the distribution transformer supplier company Kyte Powertech in Cavan town on Friday. Workers at the factory suspended their strike action following confirmation of the incident.

Today, "gardaí in Bailieborough investigating the fatal collision located the vehicle suspected of being involved in this collision.

"The vehicle has been seized and a technically examination has been completed.

"A man, aged in his late 30s was arrested this evening, Tuesday, September, 6 and he is currently detained pursuant to the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Bailieborough Garda Station, where he can be detained for a period of up to 24 hours."

Investigations are ongoing.
