A 29-year-old man has been charged with murder after police found a body they believe to be Darwin man Tony Rowe, who went missing just over a year ago.

At a press conference on Monday morning, Assistant Commissioner Michael White said the human remains were found in an "isolated area" south of Darwin late last week.

He said police were still waiting for DNA results to confirm their belief that the remains are those of 36-year-old Mr Rowe.

"To confirm his identity, at this stage I can't," Assistant Commissioner White said.

"I would hope in the next couple of days we might have an outcome.

"But certainly [it is] a very sad and solemn day in the sense of finding him and providing that closure for his mum and sister."

Assistant Commissioner White said as a result of finding the body, a 29-year-old man has now been charged with murder.

The man is already in custody after being charged earlier this month with committing a violent act causing death in relation to Mr Rowe's disappearance

"He will appear on July 12 at Darwin Local Court," Assistant Commissioner White said.

A 21-year-old woman was also charged with offences including interfering with evidence in relation to Mr Rowe's disappearance earlier this month.

Police have not announced any new charges against her at this stage.

Mr Rowe was last seen in the Palmerston suburb of Moulden on May 28, 2022, after visiting the Hibiscus Tavern in Leanyer earlier that evening.

Assistant Commissioner White said police will allege Mr Rowe was with the 21-year-old and the 29-year-old "earlier in the night" of his disappearance.
