Man, 23, suffers cardiac arrest less than a mile from Birmingham Half Marathon finish line

Joshua Breene, a 23-year-old from Hull, has completed his first half marathon since suffering a sudden cardiac arrest during a race in May 2025.
He collapsed less than a kilometre from the finish line of the Birmingham Half Marathon, where fellow runner Lloyd Heckler performed CPR until paramedics arrived.
Joshua was diagnosed with an atrial flutter, an abnormal heart rhythm, and underwent surgery, spending six days in hospital.
Lloyd, a physiotherapist, connected with Joshua via the running app Strava and visited him in hospital, providing support.
After a period of recovery and medical clearance, Joshua successfully completed the Bath Half Marathon in March 2026, raising money for the British Heart Foundation.
