Man, 20s, seriously injured as stolen car crashes into tree

A man is in a serious condition after crashing a stolen car into a sandstone pillar and tree in Knowsley.

A delivery driver reported that his black Vauxhall Astra was stolen on Hastie Close, Netherley, at around 10.30pm on Thursday, April 28. The victim, in his 50s, said the keys were grabbed out his hand by a man in his 20s.

The victim attempted to retrieve his car keys from the suspect when he was threatened with a knife. Police have confirmed that when the delivery driver was in the process of reporting the robbery, officers were called to reports of a crash on Netherley Road, a short time later at around 10.40pm.

Detectives found the stolen Vauxhall Astra had crashed into a sandstone pillar and a tree on Ox Lane in Tarbock Green. The driver, a man in his 20s, sustained major injuries and was taken to hospital. He is in a serious but stable condition.

Detectives have launched an investigation into the circumstances and are appealing for people who witnessed the robbery to come forward. Residents living in Hastie Close and surrounding roads are asked to check if their CCTV captured the robbery or the suspect driving away from the scene.

Detective Inspector Chris Saidi said: "We are now piecing together the circumstances of what took place. As you can imagine the delivery driver was very shaken by the incident which happened while he was trying to make an honest living, and he is receiving the full support of officers.

"I urge anyone who was in the vicinity last night at around 10.30pm onwards and may have noticed something suspicious to please contact us as this will help our investigation. I am also appealing for drivers and residents of Hastie Close and surrounding areas who have CCTV and dashcam to please check your footage which may have captured the robbery and the car driving off along Netherley Road towards Ox Lane.

"Anyone who witnessed the incident or with any information can contact us by DM via our social media desk on Twitter @MerseyPolice or Facebook ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’ with reference 22000291812. You can also contact the independent charity Crime stoppers anonymously, on 0800 555 111."
