NAGPUR: Malvika Bansod scaled a new high in the latest badminton rankings on Tuesday. The 20-year-old city shuttler moved 17 places up to her career-best 67th rank among the women's singles shuttlers across the globe.
In the rankings released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), Malvika jumped from 84th to the 67th position with 26,392 points. For her entry into the final of the recently held Syed Modi International Super 300 tournament, Malvika gained 5,950 points to reach her career-best rankings in the women's singles. On her debut in the World Tour Super 300 tourney in Lucknow, Malvika won silver medal after losing the summit clash to two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu.
Earlier, in the Super 500 India Open, Malvika gained 5,040 points to move 27 places up - from 111th to the 84th position - after she surprised former world No 1 Saina Nehwal in the quarterfinals.
Over the last two tournaments, Malvika jumped 44 places and is probably the only Indian shuttler to take such a giant leap in the rankings where she collected a total of 10,990 points.
As per BWF, Malvika moved up a place and is now India No. 4 behind PV Sindhu, Saina and Aakarshi Kashyap. Malvika pipped Ashmita Chaliha by two ranks on the points. While Sindhu continued to lead the Indian women players at the 7th position in the world, Saina and Aakarshi followed the leader at the 25th and 56th position.
Malvika is followed by Anupama Upadhayaya, who jumped 43 places to break into the top 100 at the 84th position, Ira Sharma (86), Rituparna Das (95) and city's Mugdha Agrey at 97th rank.
RITIKA BREAKS INTO WORLD'S TOP 100 IN WOMEN'S DOUBLES
City's doubles specialist Ritika Thaker with her Mumbai partner Simran Singhi too touched a career-best ranking in the women's doubles. The Nagpur-Mumbai duo moved 11 places up and are now world No. 93 with 17,490 points. Earlier Ritika and Simran had the best ranking at the 98th position.
