The original cast of Malcolm in the Middle is reuniting for four new episodes on Disney+.
Frankie Muniz will reprise his role as Malcolm, the gifted but beleaguered middle child, in a storyline where his parents, Hal and Lois (played by Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek), summon him home to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary.
The new episodes will debut next year, marking 25 years since the show first aired and 19 years since its finale in 2006. Since then, Muniz has pursued a career as a racing driver, while Cranston achieved widespread acclaim as Walter White in Breaking Bad.
While a release date has yet to be announced, the involvement of Malcolm’s four brothers—Francis, Reese, Dewey, and Jamie—remains a mystery. However, the original series creator, Linwood Boomer, is confirmed to be part of the project.
Muniz became a household name for the role of the genius middle child but the return is set to bring his career back from relative obscurity.
"I have been waiting for this moment for 18 years,” Muniz said in a video. “Let's find out where Malcolm and his family are now.”
Cranston and Kaczmarek also feature on the video which is on his Instagram page.
“Twenty-five years since the series began, I am so excited… that I may have peed just a little bit,” said Cranston.
Kaczmarek added: “What a delight that I get to yell at that kid again! We’re very excited about coming back together and seeing what this family has been up to.”
All original episodes of the show, which was broadcast on Fox in the US and BBC Two in the UK, can now be streamed on Disney+.
"With Linwood Boomer and the creative team at the helm, these new episodes will have all the laughs, pranks, and mayhem fans loved - along with a few surprises that remind us why this show is so timeless," said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, in a statement.
