Malcolm Brown talks Saints culture, recalls career highlight vs. New Orleans

The first day of training camp is always a fun day. A lot of first-day-of-school energy. That was certainly the case for the New Orleans Saints newly signed running back Malcolm Brown. Brown joins the team after spending his early career with the Los Angeles Rams and Miami Dolphins. At a time where there is some uncertainty about the availability of star back Alvin Kamara, Brown looks to make an impact in camp that shows what he can bring once the regular season is under way. The word he continuously used about the opportunity? “Excited.”

“I’m excited to go,” Brown told me when I asked about his first day at Saints camp. “I’m excited to just build some camaraderie with the team, meet everybody and just keep going. … Like I said, I’m excited. I’ll probably say that ten times today.”

The smile on Brown’s face as he discussed the Saints culture and it’s draw further confirmed the veteran running back’s elation to land with the team. Brown grew up in southern Mississippi with a lot of Saints fans in his family. Because of that and his action against the Saints in the past, he was well aware of the team and city’s unique connection and reputation.

“I’ve played a couple times in the Superdome,” Brown explained. “The fans, you know, the culture of the team … You can feel the energy playing these guys back in the day. I definitely knew what it was coming in and I was excited for it.” Back in 2018, one of those visits to the Superdome led to what Brown said was his “number one” play of his career as he jumped over a diving Marcus Williams and tightroped his way to the endzone.

Brown was happy to reminisce on that touchdown run, “Hopefully I can make something shake again, something like that again, in the future.” But it’s not just the memories that brought the ninth-year veteran running back to New Orleans. He also spoke highly of the Saints approach to offense and his position.

“That slash run is what people call it,” Brown explained. “Just downhill, one cut and go. I think that’s just my game. That’s my type of game. So that’s another factor in (signing).” The Saints culture thrives off of players who buy in to the community and the system. While it might be early in camp, all signs indicate that Brown will have no problem doing exactly that.
