Malang Sarr and Trevoh Chalobah star in incredible Chelsea comeback to clinch survival vs Tottenham

Chelsea's first team were on the wrong end of late comeback on Saturday as Wolves came from 2-0 down to take a point from Stamford Bridge. But on Sunday, the under-23s pulled off an incredible late showing of their own to clinch their division one status.

Thomas Tuchel will have been gutted to see Conor Coady fire in his injury-time equaliser in west London but Andy Myers experienced the opposite emotions as his reserves took on Tottenham on the final day of the Premier League 2 season. The Blues needed a win against Tottenham to ensure their place in next season's division, and that is exactly what they got. Just about.

The Blues did not exactly do it the easy way. Just before the hour mark, Tottenham took the lead after Harvey Vale had seen a strike of his own ruled out in the first half. Kion Etete was the man to give the north Londoners the lead after Lucas Bergstrom had misjudged a corner.

The time continued to tick by but Chelsea simply could not find a way back into the game. That remained the case until the 82nd minute when Dion Joseph Rankin converted a cross from Lewis Hall. But one more goal was needed to secure survival and instead send Leeds United down into division two.

In the 87th minute, Joe Haigh provided it. After an excellent run from Hall, his shot was parried back into the penalty area and the ball eventually nestled in the back of the net after a scramble ensued, saving Chelsea from the dreaded drop.

It was a game Myers was not prepared to take any chances with, even recalling first-team stars Trevoh Chalobah and Malang Sarr for the clash. Could they be joined in Tuchel's side for the 2022/23 campaign by some other members of the development squad?
