Former USC quarterback Malachi Nelson is set to visit Boise State this weekend, which would mark his first official visit since entering the transfer portal, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports.
Nelson was a former five-star recruit who committed to USC out of high school, as ESPN had him ranked No. 1 and 247Sports had him No. 13 in the entire country. The 19-year-old spent his entire freshman season with the Trojans as the third-string quarterback, appearing in just one game in 2023 and completing one pass for no yards.
Although Caleb Williams will enter the NFL draft this year, the Trojans have quarterback Miller Moss who is in a good position to become the starter after a historic performance in the Holiday Bowl.
Boise State is coming off an 8-6 season and Mountain West title, but former starter Taylen Green has already transferred to Arkansas. According to Thamel, Nelson would like to join a “blue-collar” team that is on the rise, and the Broncos are currently the favorites.
Nelson officially redshirted in 2023, so he has four years of eligibility remaining, but would have the opportunity to play immediately at Boise State instead of sitting at other schools.
