Major rail disruption for fans travelling to Croke Park today after fatal incident

Clare supporters travelling to Croke Park for Kilkenny v Clare have been advised to "make alternate arrangements" following a major rail disruption caused by a fatal incident.

The incident happened on the line near Portlaoise shortly before 09:30 this morning. As a result there were no services operating between Portlaoise and Thurles, in both directions, for hours.

A spokesperson for Irish Rail told us: "This is having a major impact on services to/from Clare, Limerick, Cork and Kerry. Clare supporters travelling to Croke Park are advised to make alternate arrangements.

"Efforts are being made to source bus transfers, but it is proving difficult.

"The line remains closed at Portlaoise and will do so until Gardai give us permission to reopen, which is expected shortly."

According to Irish Rail's most recent update on social media, the line between Ballybrophy and Portlaise is reopening. While services will resume in the area, "significant" knock-on delays are expected.

A Garda spokesman confirmed the incident, saying: "Gardai are at the scene of an incident on the train line near Portlaoise. Owing to the tragic nature of the incident no further details are available at this time."
