Major music festival cuts off as thunderstorm forces fans away from stages

One of Britain's most popular music festivals has been forced to halt over forecasts of thunderstorms and torrential rain.

Music at Parklife in Manchester's Heaton Park was stopped suddenly this afternoon (Sunday) after safety concerns.

Fans at the event's The Valley stage meanwhile were watching act Mella Dee when they were suddenly urged to "move three metres" away from the metal barriers in the case of lightning hitting.

It comes amidst yellow weather warnings issued by the Met Office this weekend for thunderstorms following a recent hot plume of air.

Parklife tweeted: "Please note for the safety of customers and staff, we are calling a full show stop.

"We are expecting this to last for 40 minutes whilst the storm passes. Thank you for your patience."

"Due to the storm, we may have to cut power on the stage.

"During this time, we may not be able to make announcements. Do not use your mobile phone or hold up flags, metal objects, selfie sticks."

Fans at the festival, thought to be attended by 80,000 on each day, have also been told to stay on the grassy areas of the park and video online has showed stewards instructing crowds, "please move three metres away from any metal structure and we'll restart the show as soon as it's possible".

The major event takes place every year at Manchester's Heaton Park and is this year being headlines by rapper Aitch, The Prodigy, Little Sims and Rudimental.

A spokesperson for the festival said: "The festival is temporarily pausing the entrance gates due to the storm."
