A major incident is ongoing at Ayr Hospital this afternoon.
Visitors and outpatients have been stopped from entering the site amidst reports of a burst boiler.
Eyewitnesses have told of crowds gathering outside the hospital reception, with staff preventing anyone from entering the building.
One told Ayrshire Live: "There are a lot of people arriving for appointments who are being told they cannot get inside.
"At first it was thought to be a fire alarm, but a member of staff has come out to say that it is a major incident due to a burst boiler.
"It's very busy with people also arriving for visiting hours. Hopefully it gets sorted quickly."
Joanne Edwards, Acute Director at NHS Ayrshire & Arran, said: "NHS Ayrshire & Arran is aware of a boiler leak at University Hospital Ayr earlier today (Friday 9 December) which resulted in the activation of the hospital fire alarm.
"The Estates team are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
"Contingency plans are in place to minimise any disruption and ensure safety of patients."
