On Friday, federal agents apprehended two Guatemalan men near downtown Los Angeles for allegedly running one of the largest human smuggling operations in the United States. Eduardo Domingo Renoj-Matul and Cristobal Mejia-Chaj are accused of facilitating the illegal entry of approximately 20,000 immigrants from Guatemala into the U.S. since 2019.
Following their arrests, both suspects appeared in federal court, where they were ordered to be held without bond. If convicted, they could potentially face the death penalty for their involvement in the operation.
