Major city centre road closed after 'police car involved in late-night crash'

A large part of the Strand was closed late on Saturday night as witnesses reported a crash had taken place.

The Strand was shut in one direction at around midnight after what witnesses believed was a crash involving a white Volkswagen and a police car. Photo and video shared with the ECHO shows a large police scene outside the Baltic Fleet pub on the Strand, responding to the incident.

Witnesses reported seeing a police car with "a chunk out of it." A photo from shortly after the incident shows a Merseyside Police vehicle which seems to be damaged to the rear end of the car.

A police car blocked off the road as police dealt with the incident, causing a queue of traffic to build up down The Strand behind the vehicle.

Witnesses reported seeing a woman "shouting" at police after the incident.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said they were not aware of any officers being injured in the incident.
