Eric Bieniemy was introduced Thursday as the new offensive coordinator of the Commanders.
Bieniemy impressed in his introductory press conference, where he answered a multitude of tough questions. His answers included one particularly strong response regarding LeSean McCoy’s critical comments of him.
After Bieniemy made a terrific first impression with the Washington media, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes took to Twitter to support Bieniemy.
“There should be no questions on how great of a man/coach Coach Bieniemy is,” Mahomes wrote. “His leadership has a direct impact on the player/person I am today. 10+ years learning under one of the greatest coaches of all time and I cannot wait for him to continue to prove the doubters wrong.”
Bieniemy, alongside Andy Reid, directed one of the NFL’s most potent offenses in Kansas City. Now in Washington, Bieniemy has received a pay bump and will have full direction of the offense for the first time in his coaching career. (Reid called the offensive plays in Kansas City.)
A strong tenure in Washington could lead Bieniemy to the head coaching position that so far has eluded him.
For now though, he will look to inspire a Commanders offense that ranked 24th among the NFL’s 32 teams in points last season.
