THANE: Commuters travelling between Mumbai and Thane would be able to zip across the two city boundaries within minutes as the authorities will complete the Kopri Railway over bridge widening work by January 2023, informed Shivsena MP Rajan vichare.
Vichare made the announcement following discussions with officials from the MMRDA and the Central Railways after a review meeting on Saturday evening. It may be recalled the MMRDA and the railways had Undertaken the work of widening the existing 4-lane railway overbridge to eight lanes in 2018 in a bit to reduce bottlenecks on the Eastern Express highway.
The work was flagged off in 2018 and was to be executed in two phases. The first phase entailed construction of two new arms of two lanes on either side of the old Bridge which was completed and made operational in October 2021. The second phase involved pulling down the old four lane Bridge and installing new girders on it.
