Magic Johnson Made Unfortunate Error When Congratulating Nuggets on NBA Title

Hall of Fame guard Magic Johnson has lived many lives: player, commentator, executive, humanitarian, etc.

None of Johnson's endeavors, however, have quite captured the public's imagination like his stint as a Twitter user. The legendary Laker's AP wire-like descriptions of NBA happenings—often sent well after a game has ended—have endeared him to a generation less familiar with Johnson’s on-court dominance.

In short, Johnson’s Twitter usage has made him relatable, and a flub after the Nuggets’ NBA championship on Monday evening contributed to that image.

Shortly after the final horn sounded on Denver’s 94–89 victory over the Heat, Johnson took to Twitter to congratulate “Nuggets president Tim Connelly” on the victory. The only problem: Connelly, the Timberwolves’ president of basketball operations, hasn’t worked for the Nuggets since leaving in May 2022.

Connelly was, however, a primary architect of much of Denver’s championship roster. The Nuggets drafted center Nikola Jokić and guard Jamal Murray during his nine-year tenure with the organization.

Johnson did get the Nuggets’ general manager, Calvin Booth, and coach, Michael Malone, correct.
