Since launching in 2015, Married At First Sight (MAFS) has become well known for editing participants into distinct character archetypes. These can include the alpha male, the outspoken bride, the “I’ve never been in a relationship” guy, or the desperately insecure person.
Sometimes it’s not even what the participant says that puts them in their category, but rather the music used, the B-roll footage shown and the comments made by the experts about them.
This season, it appears Bec Zacharia has been handed the insecure edit. The 35-year-old account manager was shown one-upping her co-star Gia Fleur when discussing their relationships at the first dinner party, and viewers clocked her online for her apparent lack of self-confidence.

Bec speaks out about her MAFS edit
While we’re only a few episodes into this year’s season, Bec has already spoken out about her on-screen portrayal and told PEDESTRIAN.TV that she doesn’t believe fans are seeing an entirely accurate depiction of her.
“I do feel a little bit like I’m being made out to be extremely insecure. That’s the online hate that I’m getting — I’m too insecure, and I’m nuts,” she said. “But I think people need to remember that you’re watching minutes of tens of hours of filming, and we’re telling a story at the end of the day.”
Bec explained that her relationship with Danny Hewitt was “a lot stronger” by the first dinner party than what was shown on TV, and there were several unseen moments from the honeymoon that brought them closer.
“You only saw the worst three hours of our honeymoon, but for seven days, we had an amazing time. There were promos of us lying in the ocean together, kissing and stuff like that,” she shared.
“I think that you’re definitely seeing that, yep, I’m a female, my husband slept with me, and the next day, friend-zoned me. Of course, I’m going to be a little bit insecure; I’m human. But I don’t think the level of insecurity that’s being portrayed is 100 per cent me.”
Regardless of any negative comments she’s received online, Bec said she’s overall quite pleased with what’s been shown.
“I think I’ve been quite funny, to be honest with you. I never thought that I was quite so funny, and some of the one-liners I come out with, I don’t even realise I do it. So in that respect, I’m happy,” she said, before adding with a laugh, “But in the insecurity respect, everyone shut up!”
She continued: “People can call me many things, but the one thing I am is transparent. Like, what you see is what you get. I say what’s on my mind; we’ve seen that. Something that I could ever be called is fake, in that respect, because I’m showing you the good, the bad, the ugly and the great.”
We’ll have to wait and see how Bec and Danny’s relationship evolves throughout the season, but if you see any more footage of her appearing insecure, maybe take it with a grain of salt.
