'Mafia scale' fly tip full of rotting rubbish in city centre beauty spot WILL be cleared up

A huge ‘mafia scale’ fly tip that has blighted a city centre beauty spot will get cleared up following the MEN’s intervention.

The ‘rotting’ rubbish was dumped in River Medlock valley woodland, near Pin Mill Brow, around a fortnight ago, says David Bailey. He says that since his initial report to the council, two more fly tips have been added to the mess.

That’s led David, a lecturer at the University of Manchester, to believe the incident is ‘organised crime’. Now, the council has said it will ‘not hesitate to take enforcement action’ against the offenders.

“It’s mafia-scale,” David said. “Someone is coming here to dump the rubbish, it’s organised crime.

“They have been back twice since. It’s regular and it’s a free-for-all. You can dump it and make £200.

“A friend of mine has put an allotment block, with herbs in, to stop vans getting in there. It’s all rotting down there now, and it stinks to high hell.”

David reported the mess to the council and councillors, he says, but it was only after the Manchester Evening News raised the issue that the council confirmed it would clean it up promptly.

A statement on behalf of Lee Ann Igbon, the council’s executive member for vibrant neighbourhoods, said: "Fly-tipping is an eyesore and an unacceptable crime which blights neighbourhoods and our green spaces, and we will not tolerate it.

“In this case, officers will be visiting the area today to investigate if there is any evidence to identify the culprits and we will not hesitate to take enforcement action. Officers will also arrange for the removal of the rubbish.

“We would encourage residents to continue their good work as additional eyes and ears in the community and to report fly-tipping and any additional information that they have so that we can continue to bring prosecutions to court to show that this behaviour is not acceptable in our city."
