A man has died after being hit by a stolen car in Victoria's Gippsland early this morning.
The 36-year-old man was with a friend in the town of Maffra, 220 kilometres east of Melbourne, when a car ran into him on Morison Street at about 3:40am.
The driver fled the scene and the stolen Kia was later found nearby on Roberts Court at about 6:00am.
The victim was airlifted to a Melbourne hospital but died soon after.
Morison Street resident Sean Farmer said he and his partner investigated after they were woken by their dogs barking.
"We got up and went out the front ... we saw the ambulances and police cars all set up," he said.
"We saw the guy that was hit by the car — he was in pretty bad shape.
"When he got loaded up into the ambulance it didn't sound good at all."
Mr Farmer said the street had seen a lot of crime in recent months which made the couple feel unsafe.
"Me and my partner have both discussed today potentially selling up and moving," he said.
"[There's been] lots of cars getting broken into and stolen around the area.
"In the last six months to a year it just seems to be happening more and more."
Victoria Police is investigating the incident along with the Homicide Squad and the Major Collision Investigation Unit.
Police are asking any witnesses or people with footage or information to contact Crime Stoppers.
