Madonna Wears Corsetry and Black Pumps for Her 2026 VMAs Return

Madonna's first MTV Video Music Awards performance in 23 years came with a wardrobe plan to match. She opened the 2026 ceremony at Los Angeles' Peacock Theater on Sept. 27 in a corseted stage look, changed for each of her trips back to the podium, and accepted Artist of the Year in classic black pumps, a detail that gained meaning once she started talking about 1984.

The opening look was styled by her longtime collaborator Rita Melssen. According to Yahoo's coverage, Madonna wore a structured black silk robe over a deep-red lingerie leotard, with a black corset cinched over the top. Fingerless gloves, fishnets and black knee-high boots finished it. Other outlets described the robe as a blazer or a satin mini trench, and at least one called the bodysuit pink-toned. Most accounts settle on a red or wine shade. Partway through the set she swapped the robe for a black leather jacket, a change the show built into the choreography as she performed "Bring Your Love" with Sabrina Carpenter and "Danceteria Afterhours" with Charli xcx.

The second outfit came when Madonna and Carpenter collected Best Collaboration. Madonna wore a black corset with attached lace sleeves over a glossy black leotard, with no pants. For Artist of the Year, she added an oversized leather jacket with spiked accents over a black satin corseted bodysuit that laced up the front, according to Footwear News. She wore classic black pumps with it.

The shoes mattered because of the story she told. Madonna used her speech to look back at the inaugural VMAs in 1984, when she performed "Like a Virgin" in a wedding dress and one of her stilettos came off. She said she dived onto the stage to retrieve it and tried to make the moment look intentional. Footwear News noted that she has told the story before, and hearing it while she stood in sturdy pumps made the callback feel deliberate. The dive itself was not one of the fashion details of the night, but it is a reminder of how much of Madonna's VMAs history was decided by improvisation.

The 2026 wardrobe also draws on a vocabulary she has used for decades. Corsetry as outerwear has been part of her image since at least the 1990 Blond Ambition tour, when Jean Paul Gaultier's cone-bra corsets became a defining stage look. Lingerie-inspired pieces layered with sharp tailoring or leather are a natural update for a performer who is 68 and still uses the stage as her showroom. The mix of soft satin, hard leather and fishnet on Sunday leaned into the same contrasts.

Reaction to the night was not uniform. Fox News reported that some viewers criticized her performance on social media while others praised it, and the fashion commentary split as well. Tom + Lorenzo, for instance, argued that her later outfit looked incomplete without the jacket. Yahoo's style team took the opposite view and called the opening look sexy, glamorous and fun.
