Madonna's rockstar lifestyle at 64 left her dangerously susceptible to bug, doctor says

Madonna's preparations for her upcoming tour may have contributed to her becoming ill recently, a doctor has suggested following her hospitalisation just days ago.

It was announced on Wednesday evening that the singer, 64, developed a "serious bacterial infection" over the weekend which led to her being put in an intensive care unit.

The news was shared by her manager Guy Oseary, 50, and he revealed that her work commitments, including her upcoming Celebration tour, would need to be 'paused'.

It's thought that her preparations for the world tour - which had been due to launch in just two weeks - had involved Madonna rehearsing and exercising six days a week.

And it has now been suggested that her preparations for the tour may have worn down her immune system and left the Grammy Award winner vulnerable to an infection.

Dr Thomas Moore, an infectious diseases expert at the University of Kansas, spoke to the Daily Mail about exhaustion, saying it can be an "issue" when someone is "run down".

He further commented to the outlet recently: "It is generally true that if you are very run down and not getting enough rest your immune system can be challenged."

The doctor also suggested that her exercise routine may not have helped, saying: "A vigorous workout [or lifestyle] is not inherently dangerous as long as you take care of yourself."

"But say your immune system is challenged [by bacteria], if you have been working too hard this makes it more difficult for it to respond and insults arise," he continued.

Dr. Moore added that any potential partying wouldn't have helped matters and said age can be a factor, noting that immune cell functions "begins to decline" as people get older.

Dr Stuart Fischer, an emergency doctor in New York, also spoke to the outlet and said any stress related to the tour "doesn't help" and may have weakened her immune system.

It's been reported that Madonna exercises six times a week to maintain her physique and that she's been working six days a week for months to prepare for her latest tour.

The comments come after it was claimed earlier this week that she had been "strenuously rehearsing" for the tour, including putting in 12 hour days, prior to being hospitalised.

Madonna's manager announced that she had been hospitalised recently in a statement on social media earlier this week, but assured that her health was "improving".

Sharing the news, he wrote in the statement days ago: "On Saturday, June 24, Madonna developed a serious bacterial infection which lead to a several-day stay in the ICU.

"Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected. At this time we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour."

Guy concluded the statement by writing: "We will share more details with you as soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows."
