Madonna adds three London O2 dates as 200,000 UK fans queue for tickets to Celebration tour

Pop icon Madonna has announced three extra dates for the UK leg of her much-anticipated Celebration world tour, after up to 200,000 fans tried to get tickets for the gigs.

She had already announced that the first European date of the greatest hits tour would take place at London's O2 Arena on Saturday, October 14. After an eventful pre-sale earlier in the week, which saw disappointed fans take to social media to complain that the 20,000-seater venue was not big enough to satisfy demand, she announced a second date last night.

Tickets went on sale this morning on Ticketmaster and LiveNation and by the time the virtual waiting room was packed with eager fans she announced two further dates, making London the single city she is appearing in most on the high-profile 35-city tour.

Madonna is now playing four UK dates in total, Saturday and Sunday, October 14-15 and then Tuesday and Wednesday, October 17-18. All tickets went on sale today and, as of this afternoon, limited availability of some of the highest priced seats is all that is left available.

Prices for seated tickets started at £47.55 with fees, going up to £432.55, while VIP packages ranged from £729.75 to £1,307.75, causing some fans to express their frustration and disappointment when they got to the front of the virtual queue.

Meanwhile many fans said they would be travelling to Europe to see the Material Girl as equivalent prices in Stockholm, Amsterdam, Antwerp and Paris worked out at hundreds of pounds less.

One fan on Twitter said: "140 for Golden Circle standing in Stockholm that would've been £450+ for seated equivalents in London."

Another added: "Ticket prices in London are wild. We're standing in Amsterdam and Stockholm for less than the price of a decent seat in London.

"If you've not got London tickets yet, come join the party abroad."

The long-awaited tour, celebrating four decades since she burst onto the music scene with her self-titled debut album, was announced in a video released to social media paying homage to her iconic Truth or Dare and staring celebrities including Judd Apatow, Jack Black, Lil Wayne and Amy Schumer.

Madonna: The Celebration Tour will start on July 15 in Vancouver, Canada before the star moves through Canada and the US at dozens of venues including two dates at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York on August 23 and 24.

The European leg begins in October, with London's O2 playing host to the first date on Saturday, October 14 before she moves through mainland Europe playing countries including Italy, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Spain, France, Germany.

The last show will be on December 1 at Amsterdam's Ziggo Dome.

Limited tickets are available now on Ticketmaster and LiveNation.
