Madhya Pradesh: 16-hour rescue operation ends in despair, boy dies in borewell in Umaria

JABALPUR: A four-year-old child, who fell into an open borewell in MP’s Umaria district, died by the time rescuers could reach him after 16 hours.

Little Gaurav was playing when he slipped into the borewell, which his father Ram Bharose Dubey owns, around 10am. The village is around 65km from the district headquarters, and it was noon by the time rescue teams arrived.

Shahdol range ADG D C Sagar, Umaria collector Sanjeev Shrivastav and SP Pramod Sinha monitored the rescue operations on the spot. “The borewell is 200 feet deep and the child got stuck at a depth of around 28 feet. A parallel tunnel was dug and then connected to the borewell and Gaurav was brought out around 4am on Friday. He was rushed to hospital but doctors declared him dead,” collector Shrivastav said.

A large number of locals had gathered during the rescue operations and were praying for Gaurav. Sources at Barhi Hospital, where the kid was taken, said he died around 5-6 hours after falling into the well. Since he fell head-first, he probably drowned, they said.

Around two months ago, a 13-month infant fell into a borewell in her father’s farm in Chhatarpur district, but was saved in a 10-hour rescue operation by the Army and SDRF.
