Machete man admits brawl after armed police called to street

A 25-year-old man has admitted brandishing a machete during a street brawl.

Darren Blease-Maguire, 25, of Bancroft Road, Widnes, appeared at Chester Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to possessing a knife in public, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray. A Cheshire Police spokesman said Blease-Maguire was charged overnight.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Liverpool Crown Court for sentence next month. Court papers said the affray involved the use or threat of "unlawful violence towards another" and the "conduct was such as would cause a person of reasonable firmness present at the scene to fear for his personal safety".

The charges followed a brawl on Frederick Street in Widnes at about 3.30pm on Saturday.

Neighbourhood officers, supported by firearms units and a helicopter, swooped on the area after receiving a report of three men, possibly armed with machetes, fighting near a bookmakers.

All three men had fled the scene.

The police spokesman told the ECHO the victim of Blease-Maguire's assault did not wish to make a complaint or cooperate with the investigation or receive treatment.

One resident told the ECHO the street had been blocked off and there had been "three cop cars with the all lights going".
