A software engineer has triggered an online discussion after withdrawing from a job offer upon discovering that the company would provide an HP laptop and did not allow employees to choose a MacBook as their work device.
The candidate communicated his decision to the hiring manager in an email, saying he was withdrawing his acceptance of the Software Engineer position after learning about the organisation's hardware policy. He explained that his choice of work device was an important part of his daily development workflow.

Engineer explains decision in viral email
In the email shared online, the engineer acknowledged that his concern might appear insignificant to some people. However, he said he was unwilling to commit to a work setup that did not match what he had expected and preferred.
"I was recently informed that I would be provided with an HP laptop as my primary work device, with no option to request a MacBook," the candidate wrote.
He also recognised that companies establish their own policies regarding employee hardware and that such decisions are generally not made according to individual preferences. Despite this, he said he preferred to withdraw before joining rather than begin the role while already dissatisfied with what he considered an important part of his working environment.
