Macaulay Langstaff form could give Notts County transfer conundrum ahead of January window

Having just gone through one transfer window, Notts County fans will be looking precariously towards January as interest hots up for some of their star players.

During the summer the Magpies made nine signings in Luke Williams' first window in charge at the Meadow Lane helm, with one signing in particular already attracting interest following his excellent start to the season.

After his fourth brace of the season against York City on Saturday, Macaulay Langstaff took his total to 12 goals in just 10 National League appearances, becoming the top scorer in the top five leagues of English football after overtaking Manchester City's Erling Haaland.

And with that form comes interest, and Notts may have a situation that feels all too familiar to them when the winter transfer window opens on January 2.

Having managed to keep midfielder Ruben Rodrigues at the club despite rumoured interest from League One side Peterborough United, the Magpies sold two of their standout players from the 2021/22 campaign.

Both Kyle Wootton and Cal Roberts left the club after receiving offers from Stockport County and Aberdeen respectively.

Speaking ahead of deadline day in September, Williams used Roberts' departure as an example of how difficult it was to keep the 24-year-old at the club, explaining that: "Aberdeen met the evaluation and met the salary, and Cal in a respectful way said, this is the one I want to go to, and he had turned down offers already."

And this could be a similar situation the Notts boss could find himself in if the number nine's rich vein of form is to continue.

Whilst keeping their Portuguese talisman at Meadow Lane was seen as the Magpies' best bit of business during the summer window, attention will be quickly turning towards the 25-year-old striker as he continues to light up the National League.

Langstaff is currently on track in his quest to beat the most goals in a campaign record currently held by former Dover Athletic man Ricky Miller, who scored 40 goals in 41 appearances in the 2016/17 season.

With a reported transfer fee of just £50,000 to acquire the services of the former Gateshead man, that market value will have certainly risen from his short time with the Magpies.

And as we have seen with Roberts and Wootton most recently, Notts are more than happy to let their most influential players leave the club, but for the right money both for them and the player.

But at the moment interest remains gossip and paper talk, and let's hope the Notts number nine continues his free-scoring form as the Magpies look to return to the EFL.
