Scotch lovers know that a high-end single malt is going to cost them, but even the savviest connoisseur might wince when they see the price tag of a new offering from Macallan.
The distiller that has a history of high-priced Scotches might have outdone itself this time with the introduction of Time:Space, which carries a suggested retail price of $190,000.
The whisky comes in a dual-chamber container that includes both the first release from the brand’s new distillery and an 84-year-old offering, which is the oldest whisky ever released by the company.
Macallan says only 200 bottles will be created, one for each year of the company’s history—and you’ll need an invitation to buy one, which can be obtained by contacting the company’s Client Services division. (That will still net it $38 million.)
The mature single malt comes from two casks that were seasoned with sherry and matured in Speyside, Scotland, with a 43.6% ABV. The other single malt offering is a 2018 vintage and meant to look to the future of the brand.
“As a Whisky Mastery Team, our roles are unique in the sense that we get to time travel—selecting whisky from the past crafted by our predecessors, whilst simultaneously laying down casks for future generations of whisky makers and consumers,” said Kirsteen Campbell, master whisky maker for Macallan, in a statement. “To nose, taste and select whisky created over eight decades ago is an exceptionally rare occasion in the life of a whisky maker and one which I will treasure.”
A second high-end offering, called Time: Space Mastery, will blend 14 cask types and be sold at select retail stores. That one will carry a price tag of $1,400.
