M6 closed as two lorry crash spreads debris across motorway

The M6 is closed in one direction after two lorries crashed outside a service station, spreading a huge amount of debris across the carriageway.

North West Motorway Police started closing the M6 northbound outside Sandbach services just after 9.30pm on Thursday, January 26 following a police incident. The motorway has since been completely closed between junctions 16 and 17 after the two lorries crashed on the carriageway.

A white lorry was pictured with severe damage to the cab, with a second blue lorry left almost unrecognisable. The vehicles are covering three lanes. North West Motorways Police confirmed "everyone walked away from the vehicles" following the incident.

North West Motorway Police Group, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Services and National Highways Traffic Officers are on scene. Work will begin to recover the vehicles overnight, but it's unknown when the carriageway will reopen.

There is also lots of debris and a spillage on the motorway which will need to be cleared up. A diversion is currently in place with road users being asked to follow the solid triangle diversion symbol on road signs.
