The M48 Severn Bridge will be closed this weekend for essential maintenance, National Highways has said. It will be closed for a total of 46 hours for repair works to be carried out on the carriageway.
The work is set to begin this Saturday (March 5), and National Highways says that the required work will be done in multiple phases "to ensure minimal disruption to motorists". Drivers will be diverted over the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge while the work is taking place.
The agency apologised for the inconvenience that will be caused to motorists, and advised drivers to plan ahead and leave a bit of extra time for their journeys.

National Highways says that resurfacing work and pothole repairs will be undertaken, which it says will "ensure safe and smooth journeys for motorists". Gantry components will also be inspected and maintenance works will be carried out.
The M48 Severn Bridge will be closed in both directions on the following days:
- Eastbound from 6am to 6pm on Saturday, March 5
- Westbound from 6am to 6pm on Sunday, March 6
- Eastbound from 7pm to 6am on Monday March 7
Eastbound from 7pm to 6am on Tuesday, March 8
The work is weather-dependent, of course, and the agency added that all work will be finished by Wednesday, March 9.
Nick Dunbar, Senior Maintenance Assurance Manager for National Highways, said: “This work will help to ensure the carriageway and the bridge are proactively maintained, reducing the need for unplanned bridge closures.
“We apologise for the inconvenience and advise motorists to plan ahead and allow a little extra time for their journeys.”
