M4 crash: Eastbound carriageway to remain closed for 'several hours' as trapped traffic turned around

The M4 Prince of Wales Bridge eastbound is set to remain closed for 'several hours' following a multi-vehicle crash. Emergency crews, including an air ambulance, rushed to the scene at around 4pm today (March 2).

In a recent update, National Highways confirmed that the air ambulance has since left the scene. However, the eastbound carriageway remains closed at the M48 junction as officers work on turning around all trapped traffic.

A diversion has been put in place for drivers. Those travelling westbound are advised to leave the motorway at junction 21 before taking the M48 Servern Bridge to junction 23.

Meanwhile, those heading eastbound are told to exit at junction 23 before taking the M48 to junction 21. However, the M48 Severn Bridge is now "extremely congested" as a result of the diversion.

National Highways said at 5.44pm: "The air ambulance has now left the scene. The Eastbound carriageway is closed at the M48 junction and will likely remain on for several hours. If you are stuck in the traffic please return to your vehicles we are working on turning all trapped traffic."

Gwent Police said earlier: "We received a report of a road traffic collision on the Prince of Wales Bridge at around 4pm on Thursday 2 March. Officers attended, along with personnel from the Welsh Ambulance Service and the Welsh Air Ambulance.

"The collision involved multiple cars and the incident is ongoing. The road has been closed between junctions 23 and 22 and diversions are in place."

The latest log from traffic monitoring site Inrix says: "M4 Prince of Wales Bridge in both directions closed severe delays, queueing traffic due to serious accident, two cars and a van involved from J23 M48 to J22 M49. Congestion to J23A ( Magor Services) for traffic heading towards England.

"Westbound traffic heading towards Wales is stacked from J19 (M32 Interchange). Roads through Bristol, Portbury and Avonmouth are already severely congested because of the M5 problems.

"Trapped traffic is now being turned around towards J23, air ambulance has left and the vehicles are awaiting recovery. Diversion - via the M48 Severn Bridge which is extremely congested."
