With Easter just over a month away, supermarket shelves are jam packed with festive chocolate treats.
But Marks and Spencer has gone one step further and launched a seasonal take on a classic sandwich. The retailer is selling a BLT hot cross bun - and it's exactly what you think.
In place of two slices of bread, a cheesy version of the usual sweet bun is filled with "maple cured bacon, semi-dried tomatoes, lettuce & smoky mayo". The BLT hot cross bun is available in the Foodhall's chilled sandwich section and costs £4.75.
Revealing the new item on their official Instagram on Friday, M&S said: "It's beginning to feel a lot like Easter in the M&S Foodhall and what better way to celebrate than by having one of our new BLT hot cross buns for lunch.
"It’s the hybrid you never knew you needed – a cheesy bun with maple cured bacon, semi-dried tomatoes, lettuce & smoky mayo."
One eagle eyed shopper was so taken a back with the unique combination that she shared her discovery online. Posting a snap of the sambo on Reddit, they simply wrote: "Only at M&S." Some members of the discussion forum were quite keen to give it a try.
One response read: "No gonna lie, that sounds delicious." A second made a clever comparison. "Like brioche buns for burgers," they said. "I bet the sweet and saltiness is lush."
A third said that putting salty bacon with a sweet bun makes sense: "Salty and sweet's often good. I've been eating salami in a hot cross bun for over 30 years."
Others had mixed feelings and couldn't decide if the sandwich was genius or an abomination. A fourth member penned:"I am disgusted, yet intrigued.
"If I am near M&S anytime soon I will definitely try one."
However, others couldn't get behind the idea, and some couldn't even believe it was real: "Cheesy" hot cross bun? How is that even a thing?" Another joked: "This looks like a dare and M and S called their bluff!"
