Luther Movie: Cast, plot and release date as first look is revealed at new Netflix adaptation

Ever since he was last on our screens in 2019, fans have been crying out to see more of John Luther, Idris Elba’s titular detective in hit BBC police drama Luther. The series concluded with the character being arrested for the ‘murder’ of lover and serial-killer Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson).

Over the years, there has long been rumours that Luther would be headed to the big screen. In September 2021, a film adaptation was confirmed. A first look teaser clip officially revealed when the Luther continuation would be released on Thursday, January 12.

Who is in the cast?

Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley both return in the new film (PA)

As mentioned, Idris Elba returns as John Luther. Whilst promoting Luther: The Fallen Sun, Elba discussed how producers were inspired by the James Bond films when creating the film. You can read more about that here.

Also returning in the film is Dermot Crowley as Luther’s boss DSU Martin Schenk. He is joined by new cast members Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis, who is playing villain David Robey.

What is the plot?

An official plot reads: “In Luther: The Fallen Sun — an epic continuation of the award winning television saga reimagined for film — a gruesome serial killer is terrorising London while the brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.”

When is it released?

Announcing the news on social media, Idris Elba confirmed that Luther: The Fallen Sun releases on Netflix on Friday, March 10 2023. It will also be released in select cinemas on Friday, February 24.
