Lunar eclipse August 2026: Where will it be visible, what time will it peak and how to watch

The August 27-28, 2026 lunar eclipse will be an exceptionally deep partial eclipse, with nearly 96.2% of the Moon's surface passing through Earth's darkest shadow. The event is expected to give the eclipsed portion of the Moon a reddish-orange appearance. However, the August 2026 lunar eclipse will not be visible from India.

NASA describes the event as a partial lunar eclipse that will be observable from parts of the Americas, Europe and Africa. The eclipse occurs when Earth moves between the Sun and Moon, causing Earth's shadow to fall across the Moon. During a partial lunar eclipse, only part of the Moon enters Earth's umbra, while the remaining portion stays outside the darkest shadow.
