Lunar eclipse 2022: Rare blood moon to light up Irish skies

A blood moon will be visible in the Irish skies as part of a rare event.

Irish stargazers will have the chance to watch a total lunar eclipse on Monday, May 16.

The event will also be visible over the rest of Europe, most of the Americas, Africa, and most of Asia.

The eclipse is expected to last from 3.32am to 5.11am in the early hours of May 16.

David Moore, the editor of Astronomy Ireland said: "Everyone should watch as the moon goes down in the west and dawn begins to break."

A lunar eclipse happens when the sun, earth, and moon align so that the moon passes into the earth's shadow.

In a total lunar eclipse, the moon fully falls within the umbra - the darkest part of the earth's shadow.

This event is also sometimes referred to as a blood moon because of the reddish tinge the full moon takes on when fully eclipsed.

When the moon moves through the earth's umbra, it blocks all direct sunlight from illuminating the moon's surface.

But some sunlight still travels to the lunar surface indirectly via the earth atmosphere which results in the reddish tint.
