'Luna Abyss' Developers Laid Off Days After Successful Launch on Xbox Game Pass

The gaming industry has seen another surprising round of layoffs. This time, it involves the team behind "Luna Abyss," the first-person horror shooter published by Kwalee Labs.

The news shocked many players because it came only days after the game launched on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. The title also debuted as a day-one Xbox Game Pass release and earned positive reviews from critics.

Never mind those achievements, as the developers behind the game have now lost their jobs in an instant.

Entire 'Luna Abyss' Team Made Redundant

The situation came to light through a LinkedIn post from Kwalee Labs CEO and Production Director Hollie Emery.

According to Emery, she and the remaining eight members of the Luna Abyss team were made redundant shortly after the game's release. She said the decision was outside the team's control and arrived unexpectedly.

The affected developers are now searching for new opportunities across the gaming industry.

Upon learning about this unfortunate scenario, many players expressed frustration that a team could be let go so soon after successfully shipping a game.

Positive Reviews Weren't Enough

What makes the layoffs even more surprising is the game's critical reception.

"Luna Abyss" currently holds an average score of 81 on Metacritic. That score reflects generally favorable reviews from gaming outlets and critics.

According to GameSpot, Emery spoke proudly about the project and the team's work. She described the game as one of the most fulfilling experiences of her career.

She also thanked the journalists and industry professionals who supported the title leading up to launch.

Unfortunately, strong reviews do not always guarantee financial security. The modern gaming industry has repeatedly shown that even well-received games are not immune to layoffs and restructuring.

'Luna Abyss' Player Count Drops After Launch

While official Xbox Game Pass numbers have not been released, Steam data offers a glimpse into how the game performed.

Shortly after launch, "Luna Abyss" reached a peak of 18,597 concurrent players on Steam. That's a solid start for a new independent title.

However, the numbers declined rapidly in the following weeks. Recent data shows a 24-hour peak of just over 300 concurrent players.

While player drops are common after launch, maintaining long-term engagement has become one of the biggest challenges facing modern game developers.

What Is 'Luna Abyss'

"Luna Abyss" is a first-person horror shooter set on a mysterious moon known as Luna.

Players take control of Fawkes, a prisoner forced to explore dangerous underground structures. Guiding the journey is an artificial intelligence overseer named Aylin, whose true intentions remain unclear.

As players descend deeper into the moon's hidden passages, they encounter terrifying cosmic creatures and uncover secrets tied to the world's dark history.

If you love psychological horror, narrative-driven exploration, and fast-paced combat, this game is the best for you.

Another Reminder of Industry Uncertainty

The layoffs at Kwalee Labs are part of a larger trend affecting the gaming industry.

Over the past few years, developers across studios of all sizes have faced job cuts, restructuring efforts, and budget reductions. In many cases, layoffs have occurred regardless of a game's review scores or launch success.

Before this announcement, Xbox said it would soon lay off several employees.
