Lumo train's emergency stop causes passenger panic and minor injuries

An investigation has been launched after a London-bound Lumo train from Newcastle was forced into an emergency stop on Sunday morning (April 17). The 0825 service (1Y80) to Kings Cross came to a sudden halt near Peterborough causing panic and minor injuries amongst its passengers.

British Transport Police said 15 people suffered minor injuries and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch had been informed. Lumo, meanwhile, said all travellers were rerouted before the train was taken out of service for safety checks causing later journeys to be cancelled.

Passenger Neuma Domingos took to Twitter and said: "Knee hurts!! And pretty shaken up but will be okay, felt terrified when the train started moving again."

Ellie Foster, meanwhile, also described her experience on the social media platform. "At the time, we didn’t have a clue what happened and to me it felt like the train did derail (obviously it didn’t) and continued to jolt passengers and luggage around the carriage. It was a very scary experience and could of ended it a lot worse than it did."

Operator Lumo said it was "very sorry for any distress the sudden stop may have caused. Such events can be jolting for passengers and we took great care to check on everybody's welfare. There was some falling luggage and naturally many people will have felt the effects of the sudden halt."

It added: "A full investigation is now under way and we are supporting our driver and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch to determine precisely what happened."
